Major brain tumour surgery marks historical intervention at the Rand Memorial Hospital, Grand Bahama

The second historic surgical intervention in as many weeks performed at the Rand Memorial Hospital (RMH) on Saturday October 16th, 2021. The procedure which involved the removal of a brain tumour from a 70-year-old female patient marked the first such intervention for Grand Bahama Health Services, and by extension the island of Grand Bahama.  

Professor Dr. Magnus Ekedede, Consultant/Chief of Neurosurgery, Princess Margaret Hospital and Doctors Hospital led the historic neurosurgical procedure. He was assisted by teams from Princess Margaret Hospital and Rand Memorial Hospital.  
Dr.  Ekedede acknowledged the support of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health, in addition to the management team at Grand Bahama Health Services in facilitating the process to make the surgery possible. He described the opportunity as a fact-finding mission and said it will play an important role in the accomplishment of future cases.

Dr. Freeman Lockhart, Medical Chief of Staff, Grand Bahama Health Services said that it was necessary to take the approach of having a visiting surgeon perform the surgery as the Princess Margaret Hospital was challenged as far availability of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds. Dr. Lockhart said he looked forward to continued collaboration between the Rand Memorial Hospital and the Princess Margaret Hospital in the delivery of quality healthcare. 

This surgery follows a recent complex open reduction thoracic spine fracture procedure that was performed at the Rand Memorial Hospital on October 8th, 2021.
