Nassau, Bahamas - Statement by the Member of Parliament for the Seabreeze Constituency on the Shootings of Four (4) Individuals in the Sandilands Village area on the 31st December, 2016.

It is with deep, profound sadness and regret that this, the first day of January, 2017, a brand new year is already marred with the sad news of a homicide. Reports received are that last night 31st December, 2016, just before midnight, the shooting of Four (4) individuals occurred off of Sandilands Village Road, in the Seabreeze Constituency.

This carnage resulted in the death of a young man and severe injuries to the Three (3) other individuals. My sincere condolences and heart-felt sympathies are extended to the family of this young man. I also pray for the life and recovery of the other victims. It is difficult to comprehend the complete disregard for the value of human life that has seemingly overtaken so many of us.

The hopes, dreams and aspirations of so many of our young people have been squandered through senseless, violent acts. Equally disturbing is the proliferation of guns in our beloved Bahamaland and the gratuitous use of firearms as a means of resolving issues. Moving forward in 2017 it is my hope and prayer that we will find more effective ways to stem the tide of the illegal trafficking of firearms to our shores.

Most importantly, there is a critical need for us to find a more effective way of communicating with our young people, particularly our young men, to demonstrate that there are other ways of solving issues than through violence. LIFE IS PRECIOUS!
