NASSAU, The Bahamas -- The Department of Gender and Family Affairs of the Ministry of Social Services and Urban Development hosted leaders and members of several major non-governmental organizations (NGO's) with primary focus on the training, improvement and development of girls and young women in The Bahamas, in anticipation of the United Nations International Day of the Girl Child 2018 on October 11. Minister of Social Services and Urban Development the Hon. Frankie Campbell said at the meeting, the International Day of the Girl Child (observed since 2012) aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face on a daily basis. Minister Campbell stated: adolescent girls have the right to a safe, healthy and educated life, not only during these critical formative years, but also as they mature into women. If effectively supported during the adolescent years, he said, girls have the potential to change the world -- both as empowered girls of today and as tomorrow's workers, mothers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads, social cultural, political and private sector leaders. "This meeting with your organizations is to demonstrate my Ministry's commitment to embrace the skills, passion, commitment and vision of civil society to fulfill some national and international needs outlined in my Ministry's portfolio."
Present was Director of Gender and Family Affairs, Dr. Jacinta Higgs. Organizations represented included Zonta Club of New Providence, The Bahamas Girls Guides, the Governor General's Youth Awards (GGYA), Teen Life Skills Bahamas, and the Pilot Club of Nassau. Minister Campbell presented grants on behalf of the government as small tokens of gratitude and celebration of the existing partnership between the government and the organizations.
