FREEPORT, The Bahamas -- Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville stated the Buckeye Bahamas Hub serves as a leading hub in the Caribbean region and the largest petroleum products terminal in the Western Hemisphere; playing a very important and vital role in the Grand Bahamian and global economy.

The Minister’s remarks, which were read by Senator Tanisha Tynes, came during the dedication and renaming ceremony of Buckeye Bahamas Hub’s fire trucks, January 27, 2017 at Buckeye Bahamas.

The event was not just to present the company’s new fleet of firefighting equipment, but to name one of the trucks in honor of a former employee, Mark Wilson, who died tragically in a car accident in October of 2016.

Minister Darville noted that the Buckeye Bahamas Hub currently has over 26 million barrels of storage capacity and eight berths; including two VLCC-capable berths. This storage includes capacity for crude oil, fuel oil and VGO, diesel fuel, gasoline and components.

“These products are imported from locations around the world and stored or blended at Buckeye Bahamas Hub for export, including to regional consumers, key import locations in the Americas and long haul markets in Asia,” Minister Darville pointed out.

Senator Tanisha Tynes brought remarks on behalf of Minister for Grand Bahama the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville, who was the scheduled speaker for the dedication and renaming ceremony of Buckeye Bahamas Hub’s fire trucks on Friday, January 27, 2017 on the grounds of Buckeye Bahamas.

“Due to the scale of the location, Buckeye Bahamas Hub is ideally suited for blending, trans-shipping and terminal operations for global trade flows.

“Being a company that processes such an important natural resource, the Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas is very pleased to know that your company takes the safety of your workers and the protection of our island’s environment seriously.”

Minister Darville said that it is the government’s firm belief that corporate profits must be matched with corporate responsibility. As such, he added that he was delighted to see the Buckeye Bahamas Hub taking action and reaffirming its responsibility, both to its customers as well as to the community of Grand Bahama.

The Minister said that it was touching to hear that one of the main fire trucks was being named in honor of Wilson, who worked in the Health, Safety, Security and Environment Department.

“Hearing from individuals close to him and those who worked with him, Mark was indeed a man of honor and integrity, who worked hard and gave his best effort to see the advancement and improvement of his country, community and company,” said Minister Darville.

Senior Director of Global Marine Terminals, Christopher Corcoran said that safety and proper training continues to be of optimum importance for the Buckeye Bahamas Hub. He said he’s looking forward to training local employees will undertake in the new fire trucks, something which Mark Wilson had anticipated being a part of just before his tragic accident.
