Nassau, The Bahamas - The Ministry of Agriculture & Marine Resources donated $70,000 to support a diversified group of 100 Bahamian youth sailors in this year's Sir Durward Knowles National Junior Sailing Regatta, held April 21 and 22, at the Nassau Yacht Club on Montagu Beach, East Bay Street. The series of E-class sloop races on Friday yielded three new top winners for 2017, which were the "Jumping Jack", coming in first, the "Scholar Ship", coming in second, and the "Lady Kayla", coming in third. Saturday's Optimist championship race yielded three top winners as well: Issac Fox came in first; followed by Melisha Higgins in second place; and Dawson Knowles finishing up in third place.
Minister of Agriculture & Marine Resources, the Hon. V. Alfred Gray, kept his promise to support the Regatta, which benefits both government and private school students, in extracurricular activities. Minister Gray hinted at adding incentives the Ministry was considering to encourage growth of the popular sport, possibly the increase of government seed money to the Regatta sector. Robert Dunkley said that "the idea of the regatta experience is that youth sailors are coached in more important core-social skills of leadership, teamwork, work-life balance, as well as accepting diversity and equal opportunity, while learning Regatta sloop sailing and having fun." The history of the Sir Durward Knowles Junior Sailing Regatta dates back in 2010, when Regatta organizers Capt. Eleazor Johnson, 'Lady Nathalie' sloop owner, Sir Durward Knowles, and Jimmy Lowe, formed the youth organization activity, which takes place every year. Since then to date, the youth regatta has attracted the support of the Regatta Desk at the Ministry of Agriculture & Marine Resources, and pilot schools such as C.V. Bethel, which actively promotes the sport in curriculum.
