The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises members of the public that, in a virtual meeting held 28th January 2021, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Darren A. Henfield, MP, received a copy of the letters of appointment from the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, for Dr. Garry Conille to serve as the United Nations Resident Coordinator (UNRC), with residence in Jamaica.

In the meeting held after the presentation, both parties acknowledged the effort of the UN to reinforce its presence in The Bahamas through the prospective establishment of a satellite UNRC Office, to be headed by a Bahamian.

The Minister reiterated, through Dr. Conille, his appreciation to the UN Secretary-General on his visit to Abaco in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian and his support on the continuing effect of Climate Change on Small Island Development States (SIDS).
Both sides agreed that an in-country visit by Dr. Conille and his team based in Jamaica would be useful in gaining a deeper appreciation for the realities faced on the ground. The Ministry anticipates an in-person visit by the Resident Coordinator and the UN team by April 2021.
