FREEPORT, Grand Bahama – Minister of Tourism and Member of Parliament for West Grand Bahama and Bimini, the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe, expressed extreme gratitude at the contract signing and ground breaking ceremony for the Causeway to replace the Fishing Hole Road, on Friday December 18, 2015.

“Today is a good day for the island of Grand Bahama. Our future is bright.”

Minister Wilchcombe, began by saying the journey of getting to this bridge started some 60 years ago when it was more than an infrastructural issue. “It was an issue that was considered by those who were the fighters for the liberty of our country, a place of separation, a division where there was a Freeport and a West Grand Bahama.” He said it was a social and economic problem to this Island.

“It was 20 years ago, a young man by the name of Caleb Outten joined together with others and led the charge that something must be done about this road because he understood the separation of a different kind. Ten years ago when hurricanes Frances, Jeanne and Wilma hit West Grand Bahama, and for many days, the people of West Grand Bahama could not get through to Freeport to bring help for the injured in West Grand Bahama.” It was an ambulance driver Marcus Garvey who risked his life to help the injured in West End. Minister Wilchcombe saluted them all, calling them heroes.

The Minister then told the Prime Minister of The Bahamas, the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie, that he does not understand all he is doing for Grand Bahama and especially West Grand Bahama. Mr. Wilchcombe added, “I will sum it all up Prime Minister, you have begun the bridge to the future of West Grand Bahama” by doing the following:

· Establishing the Urban Renewal 2.0 under the leadership of Mrs. Michelle Reckley.

· Eight Mile Clinic no longer closes at 4pm, but opens until 11pm.

· Re-opening of the Fire Station in Eight Mile Rock that was closed since the storms.

· Duty free concessions for business owners in East and West Grand Bahama: more than 70 business owners have benefited from this concession.

All Bahamas Construction Company Limited (ABC) will construct the new causeway at a cost of $6,553,584.89. Minister Wilchcombe congratulated Prime Minister Christie for the job he is doing.
