FREEPORT, Grand Bahama - Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe on Wednesday encouraged students of Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy to strive to be their best during a special Awards Celebration recognizing the students for their accomplishments this academic year.

Held under the theme, "Strive for Excellence," the Minister gave examples of Bahamian greats who overcame obstacles and are well-known in their chosen professions. Two examples he gave were Sir Sidney Poitier, who started in New York washing dishes and was taught by a Jewish friend to read -- today, the well-known actor is also directing films and writing books; and Andre Rodgers, who was a cricket player but became the first Bahamian to play major league baseball.

Bahamians have shown greatness on the world stage, he said, and with limited resources our country competes with the best and with those who invest millions in their athletic programmes.

Minister Wilchcombe added that while they were all part of winning teams, he hoped they were learning lessons of team play, stating a successful team works together, and they turn to each other throughout life. He referenced remarks by Principal Norris Bain of not being able to be great champions without being graceful losers.

"What you do in school is preparing you for life," he said. Minister Wilchcombe encouraged the students to embrace the celebration but know that there is always a tomorrow -- they should focus on being the best. "Don't worry about the competition," he said, "let the competition worry about you."
