Nassau, Bahamas - In an effort to improve learning and achievement levels in schools, educators and stakeholders are participating in a three-day workshop.
Held under the theme, ‘Improving student achievement: Supervising literacy, numeracy and character development in your district or school, the workshop is being conducted by Dr. Elvis Glaze, CEO of the Toronto Literacy & Numeracy Institute. The workshop is being held March 7 – 9 at the Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort.
Calling the event a ‘timely and encouraging’ one, Minister of Education the Hon. Desmond Bannister said the workshop coincides with the Ministry’s objectives.

“In 2009, we called for renewed emphasis on the three R’s of Reading, Writing and Arithmetic so that we could concentrate on raising the literacy and numeracy levels of our students,” said Mr. Bannister. “Additionally, we called for students to conduct themselves with respect and responsibility so as to encourage the development of good character and values in our children.”
He said officials at the Ministry of Education are ‘pleased’ that some of these objectives have started to materialise in concrete ways. “Your presence demonstrates your willingness to embrace positive change and to lead the way in implementing the same,” said Mr. Bannister.
With words of encouragement to continue to press on with their efforts, Mr. Bannister urged the educators and stakeholders to ‘recommit themselves to supporting the improvement of student achievement.’
“Use this opportunity to reflect our programmes in literacy, numeracy and character development throughout our school system.”
Mr. Bannister said that as school districts throughout the world grapple with understanding ways to achieve success, Dr. Glaze’s insights in education will prove to be ‘productive and meaningful.’
