NASSAU, The Bahamas – Deputy Prime
Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs the Hon Brent Symonette will
lead a Bahamian delegation to the Fortieth General Assembly of the
Organisation
of American States in Lima, Peru from June 6-8, 2010.
Mr. Symonette will be accompanied by
His Excellency C A Smith, Bahamas Ambassador to Washington and Permanent
Representative; Rhoda Jackson, Minister Counselor; and Marjorie Julien,
Foreign Service Officer, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Symonette will participate in
discussions
on: “Peace, Security and Cooperation in the Americas”. Talks
will also focus on maritime and human rights issues.
The Organisation of American States
is the world’s oldest regional body, dating back to the First
International
Conference of American States held in Washington, D.C. from October
1889 to April 1890.
The OAS came into being in 1948 with
the signing in Bogota, Columbia of the Charter of the OAS. The charter
came into force in December 1951.
