The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Darren. A Henfield, will lead The Bahamas’ delegation participating virtually in the 50th Regular Session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States, to be held from 20th to 21st October 2020, Washington, DC.  The Session, which will be convened under the theme, “Facing the Challenges of COVID-19 in the Hemisphere: A Collaborative Approach to Address Vulnerabilities and Build Resilience in Times of Crisis, Based on the Four Pillars of the OAS”, will be an historic one, in that for the first time member states will meet in a virtual forum in light of the Coronavirus pandemic. The Bahamas was originally to have hosted the 50th OAS-GA, but the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic changed this. Prior to the opening of the Assembly, the Minster will engage in a dialogue with member states that are permanent observers at the OAS, 19th October.

The Assembly is expected to address a wide range of issues currently facing the hemispheric body among which are the Coronavirus pandemic and economic recovery post COVID, human rights, hemispheric security, climate change, the financial situation of the organization and a range of political issues. The OAS which comprise 36 member states, was created in 1948 as a hemispheric body to address matters of a political, social and economic dimension impacting the region and seeking solutions; as well as promoting the concept of democracy and human rights.  The Bahamas became a member state in 1982.

Other members of The Bahamas delegation include, H.E. Ambassador Sidney Collie, Permanent Representative of The Bahamas to the OAS and diplomatic staff of the Permanent Mission; and H.E. Ambassador Sharon Brennen-Haylock, Director General, Ministry of Foreign Affairs,  H. E. Dr. Kenya Ward, Ambassador at large in the Office of the Minister and the Foreign Service Officers in the Americas Division of the Ministry.
