Nassau, Bahamas - On Thursday 7th March, 2019, Mrs. Cora Bain-Colebrooke, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport & Local Government, accompanied by members of the Junior Road Safety Committee travelled to George Town, Exuma to officially launch the Junior Road Safety Officer Program.

During her remarks, PS Bain-Colebrooke reminded the Junior Road Safety Officers of the importance of Road Safety. “Always remember to look both ways before crossing the street; remind mom and dad to buckle (their) seat belts when travelling on the road, and that texting while driving is not a good practice” she said.

The Junior Road Safety Program was implemented in schools throughout The Bahamas beginning in New Providence on 21st March, 2018. Since then, the Junior Road Safety members have travelled to Grand Bahama, Abaco, Cat Island, and Eleuthera to implement the program in the various schools on the aforementioned Family Islands. The Committee is made up of Mr. Joel Lewis, Mr. Michael Hudson, Ms. Simone Francis, Ms. Karen Mortimer, Mrs. Donna Bannister and Mr. Pharez Rolle.

This initiative gives two students from grades four and five of each primary school the opportunity to lead in promoting road safety to their school communities by giving talks, organizing competitions, erecting posters and using as many “fun” ideas as they can while getting serious messages across.
