NASSAU, The Bahamas --Spreading the message to high school students that drugs are not the answer for daily problem solving, the Ministry of National Security made a special presentation to Anatol Rodgers High School, October 8, during its 2014 Drug Awareness Campaign. Under the theme, ‘Drug Free, The Way to Be’ – the Ministry gave the students a demonstration and exhibition to increase their awareness of the dangers of drugs.

Shervin Lloyd, Demand Reduction Officer at the Ministry of National Security, asked that the students hold fast to the theme message for the rest of their lives as awareness of the dangers of drugs could make a big difference in important life decisions.

He explained to the students that for the Ministry, promoting drug awareness is just as important as law enforcement and interdiction of drug offences that eventually lead to arrests and prison terms. To explain further, he used the example of two students who may have begun as prodigies or showing academic promise – but whose lives can take very different paths if one makes the wrong kind of decision.

He affirmed he knows it’s possible because, like the Anatol Rodgers students, he also attended a government school and remained drug and crime free.

Said Mr. Lloyd: “If I did it, you can. I also know whatever you can perceive you can achieve. There is absolutely no limitation to our lives. But, I’ll tell you this -- you put limitation on your life when you use drugs or get involved in criminal activities. It is not cool, getting involved with such destructive behavior. Therefore, students, when you view this anti-drug exhibition take this message, ‘ Drug Free is the Way to Be,’ and live accordingly. The Bahamas needs you, this world needs you.” (BIS Photos/Gena Gibbs)
