Inaugural Maritime Youth Expo Held in Bahamas

Nassau, The Bahamas – The Ministry of Transport and Aviation in partnership with private sector stakeholders in the maritime industry hosted the first Maritime Youth Expo Monday, March 17, at C.H. Reeves Junior High School.

Minister of Transport and Aviation Glenys Hanna-Martin, Minister of State in the Ministry of Transport and Aviation Hope Strachan, along with Lorraine Armbrister, permanent secretary and Peter Deveaux Isaacs, undersecretary were among the government officials present. Music was provided by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Band.

Speakers included: Don Forbes, Training Manager at Grand Bahama Shipyard; Captain Guus, captain of the Disney Dream; Captain Glenn Bain, Bahamas Maritime Connexion; Eugene Munroe, Bahamas Maritime Cadet Corps; Jamal Smith and Campbell Shipping and Maritime School.

Topics were: “Choosing a Career in Maritime/Shipyards”, “Being Prepared for International Opportunities”,“Becoming Qualified for Leading Careers in the Maritime Industry”, “What is expected of a Maritime Cadet” and “Study at Home at the new “LIM Academy”.

Dr. Wayne Thompson, moderator for the event, told the seventh, eighth and ninth grade students that opportunities to take them around the world were present and they should absorb all the information available.

Minister Hanna-Martin said the country is entering an era when Bahamians are beginning to grasp the potentials of the sea and what it has to offer in industries of shipping, energy, technology and science. She advised the students that the Expo would expose them to possible career options in these fields.

Exhibits of various products and services from stakeholders in the maritime field were on display in the school’s auditorium for students to view.
