FREEPORT, Grand Bahama – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, the Hon. Frederick A. Mitchell said Friday that he was very pleased with the new training initiative put in place at Grand Bahama Shipyard to train a large number of Bahamians in various aspects of ship repair.

On Thursday, the company signed an agreement for a historic multi-targeted training program. The initiative is the first of its kind, as over the course of the next four years more than 600 Bahamians will be recruited, trained, and certified in an effort to replace expatriates who are currently employed at the company.

Minister Mitchell also saluted Minister for Grand Bahama the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville for his efforts in bringing forth the agreement. The Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister was unable to attend the signing of the agreement at the Grand Bahama Shipyard on Thursday, but met with the press Friday morning at the Ministry for Grand Bahama to lend his full support for the project

“As the Minister for Immigration, I want to let the people of Grand Bahama know of the support of myself personally, and of the Ministry, for the announcement and the program that was organized with Grand Bahama Shipyard.

“All along the way, the policies of the Department of Immigration were designed to promote the Bahamianization of the industrial complex here in Freeport. This has been a joint aim and objective of the Ministry for Grand Bahama, the Department of Immigration, and the Government generally.”

Minister Mitchell said when Minister Darville announced a few weeks ago that the new system was being put in place at Grand Bahama Shipyard to ensure that Bahamians benefited from the industrial economy, and that the shipyard and the National Training Agency would ensure the initiative was successful, the Department of Immigration was very pleased.

According Mr. Mitchell, one of the most impressive sights for him in visiting Grand Bahama Shipyard was to see the number of young people there, and how dedicated and interested they were in the work and the training they were being given.

The Minister for Grand Bahama affirmed the close working relationship between his Ministry and that of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, adding that what was achieved was the result of two years of coordination with the industrial and private sectors to integrate young people into their processes. He continued that the template established with Grand Bahama Shipyard is a very solid one that will be replicated as other companies take up the programme.
