Mitchell to address UN Security Council on SIDS
Jul 30, 2015 - 10:07:46 AM

Minister of Foreign Affairs the Hon. Fred Mitchell is in New York where he is scheduled to address a special session of the Security Council of the United Nations at 10 am on Thursday, 30th July 2015.

Mr. Mitchell will address the security and existential concerns of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) such as The Bahamas and CARICOM generally, bringing greater awareness of their concerns to the Security Council and the world.

“It is important to note that CARICOM supports this effort by New Zealand who is the current chair of this session and a member of the UN Security Council, having campaigned for membership of the Council on the theme of bringing the concerns of SIDS to world attention. The Bahamas supported them on that basis” said Mitchell from New York on Wednesday evening.

Additionally, Bahamians would recall that New Zealand was helpful in offering technical assistance and advice to The Bahamas during the planning and implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT).

“It is in a spirit of comity therefore that we support New Zealand in this effort” said Mr. Mitchell.

Mr. Mitchell's address will be live streamed on UNTV
