From:TheBahamasWeekly.com Bahamas Information Services Updates On Friday, November 22, 2013, fire erupted at the newly built facility, which was severely damaged by smoke and water. As a result, the staff was housed at its former offices on the first floor of the Churchill Building, downtown Nassau, until repairs to the state-of-the-art facility were completed. The NEMA building was built at an estimated $1.7million. It also houses a modern National Emergency Operations Centre, amongst other amenities to accommodate the national disaster committee in the event the country is faced with a disaster. NEMA first moved into its building on August 23, 2013 just around the anniversary of the Category 5 Hurricane Andrew, which struck The Bahamas and caused millions in damage and four related deaths in 1992.
