NEMA to conduct TEST EXERCISE on Hurricane Preparedness

NASSAU, The Bahamas – The National Emergency Management Agency will conduct an exercise today, June 8, 2018 to TEST its level of readiness should a hurricane or national disaster occur.

The TEST would involve all sectors, ministries, departments and agencies of The Bahamas government, including all administrators, and local government practitioners in all settlements, districts and Family Islands of the Commonwealth of Bahamas, in responding to an imminent threat of a major hurricane.

The aims of this exercise are as follows:

  1.     Test the alerting mechanisms for an impending tropical hazard;
  2.     Test all communication modes;
  3.     Examine the emergency management governance mechanism in all districts and islands, inclusive of activation of Emergency Operation Centers;
  4.     Shelter activation and operations;
  5.     Activation of relief supply and distribution mechanism;
  6.     Activation of districts, island mass evacuation;
  7.     To identify challenges and gaps in the existing hurricane plans of the various islands.
  8.     To facilitate an update to national plans and identify best practices for implementation during the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

The exercise scenario involves Category 4 Hurricane ALEXANDER, approaching the Bahamian archipelago form the south and traversing up the center of the chain of islands. The winds and associate surges are anticipated to produce devastating impacts along the projected path of the hurricane.

The National Emergency Management Agency’s Disaster Management Committee is expected to activate its disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery program in an effective and efficient manner in order to save lives and the protection of property.

Exercise Timeline:

The exercise will be conducted from 10:00am  - 4:00pm on Friday 8th June,
