NEMA to hold Disaster Conference for Southern Islands

NASSAU, The Bahamas – The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, in collaboration with the United States Embassy, the Pacific Disaster Centre, and the United States Northern Command will host a disaster Conference for the Southern Bahamas, June 2 to 4, 2015 at Meliá Nassau Beach Resort, Cable Beach.

Participants are Family Islands Administrators and other representatives from Local Government, and members of the National Disaster Consultative Committee who will engage in dialogue in the 2015 National Bahamas Knowledge Exchange under the theme: ‘Be Disaster Aware -- Building Disaster Resilient Communities.’

The objectives of the 2015 Conference are to:

· build capacity and knowledge exchange in the field and strengthen the level of disaster preparedness and response in the country;

· develop and deliver a “train the trainer” course in Disaster Management Fundamentals and Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) operations; and,

· discuss the process for selecting personnel to train in hazard mapping.

The Rt. Hon. Perry Christie, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas is expected to official open the conference Tuesday, June 2 at 6pm at Meliá resort.

Participants are from Cat Island, Long Island, Mayaguana, Inagua, Acklins, Crooked Island, Long Cay, Rum Cay, and San Salvador.

NEMA will continue to train a wide range of professionals from the community to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities and would like to continue strengthening its ongoing relationship and partnership with all Government agencies to better prepare to respond to all emergencies and disasters.
