Freeport, Grand Bahama – The National Health Insurance Secretariat held two successful community meetings in Grand Bahama last week. Secretariat members Dr. Delon Brennen and Damara Dillett had a conversation with persons in Freeport on the evening of February 3rd and Ms. Dillett met with residents in McLean’s Town on February 4th. The Minister for Grand Bahama and member of the Cabinet Subcommittee on National Health Insurance the Honourable Dr. Michael Darville visited McLean’s Town on February 4th and conversed with residents when the town meeting concluded.

During the meetings, Dr. Brennen and Ms. Dillett delivered a short presentation to outline what NHI Bahamas is, why it is needed, who is eligible, what is covered under the primary care phase, and what to expect going forward. The team also took questions from residents and clarified many misconceptions and other areas of interest.

“Educating our friends and neighbours and being able to answer their questions through a forum like a town hall meeting is extremely important for something as life changing as NHI Bahamas will be for our population,” said Permanent Secretary for NHI Bahamas, Peter Deveaux-Isaacs. “The Secretariat knows the public still has many questions – that is precisely why we are connecting directly with Bahamians. We will continue to educate persons throughout The Commonwealth of The Bahamas on the Government’s new NHI Bahamas programme so all legal Bahamian residents can benefit from it.”

These two events were only the first in a wider schedule of town hall meetings and presentations the NHI Secretariat will hold throughout the country. Upcoming community meetings include:

Nassau, New Providence – Thursday February 11, 8pm at Bahamas Communications Public Officers Union (BCPOU) hall on Farrington Rd.

Eight Mile Rock, Grand Bahama – Friday February 12, 6pm at Mount Zion Baptist Church Hall, Jones Town.

West End, Grand Bahama – Friday February 12, 8pm at Mary Magdalene Parish Hall.

Members of the Secretariat will also meet with representatives of the Bahamas Insurance Association and the Bahamas Christian Council during the week of February 8, 2016. Additionally, more meetings will be announced in the coming days as the schedules are finalized. The Secretariat also plans to
arrange a second meeting in Freeport for those residents who were not able to attend the February 3rd events.

All residents are encouraged to attend to become more informed about NHI Bahamas and the benefits of the programme. The Secretariat is also meeting with stakeholder groups regularly. Any group that wishes to schedule a presentation by the NHI Bahamas team may contact the Secretariat directly.
