Nassau, The Bahamas -The National Training Agency (NTA) commenced its first Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level III Diploma Course in Leadership and Management on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at its ILM Approved Centre, Gladstone Road and Munnings Drive.
The first government entity to partner with the Agency in this effort is the Royal Bahamas Defence Force. In attendance at the program launch was Senior Lieutenant of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, Origin Deleveaux. Also present were Executive Director of the National Training Agency, Gadville McDonald and Coordinator and Administrator of the Institute of Leadership and Management, Aleyenne Johnson, with other senior officials from both NTA and RBDF.
Through this training, the ILM aims to help participants gain a range of key management skills, put new skills into practice in their own roles, build leadership capabilities, motivate and engage teams, manage relationships confidently, and develop leadership skills using participants’ own knowledge, values and motivations. With these qualities combined, the impact for employers becomes overall workplace improvement.

The nature of the training program for the officers will be, as Mr. McDonald said, “Competency based… where results matter.” This means that learners must be able to demonstrate what they have learned.
Examinations are not necessarily written; and the diploma course is flexible with no set duration. Level 3 comprises 193 guided learning hours for 55 credit values, with each unit earning anywhere between 3-30 guided learning hours. Topics include: Understanding Health and Safety in the Workplace, Developing People in the Workplace, and Understanding Stress Management in the Workplace.
The ILM in the Bahamas currently offers levels 2 and 3 of the Leadership and Management Diploma Program. However it aims to obtain approval for the remaining levels, 4-7 -- level 7 being the equivalent of a Master’s Degree.
According to Lieutenant Origin Deleveaux, the long-term goal of the RBDF for this training is to develop leaders among their officers – complementing military training with modern leadership skills: an innovative and strategic decision of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.
The ILM offers this training to individuals as well as agencies, catering to the specific needs of one’s self or team.
