NASSAU, The Bahamas -- Minister of the Environment and Housing, the Hon. Romauld Ferreira launched his 'Be a Hero' national cleanup campaign with school visits at T.A. Thompson Junior High School, Gregory Street, and L.W. Young Junior High School, Bernard Road, at the start of the school day on Monday morning.   At school assemblies he encouraged young people to play an important part in creation of clean, green living environments in their communities.

The Ministry of the Environment and Housing, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Education, began the initiative in October, seeking to foster a greater sense of pride in cleaner, safer environments.  Minister Ferreira pointed out that statistics support the link between clean, green spaces and environments, and safe communities, and during the school visits he speaks to students about the importance.

As part of taking action, students are encouraged to remind peers, and parents, not to litter.  ‘Be a Hero, Make Your Bahamas a Clean, Safe Bahamas’ participants also identify a project at their school or community that they would like to improve within a six-month period.  Students post “before” images on the 'Be a Hero' social media pages and update images on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter as the work progresses.  Winners are announced at the end of the six months.

Ten winners will be selected to replace the campaign’s current heroes: local sports, music and civic notables including Jonquel Jones, Chris Brown, Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Kirkland “KB” Bodie, Dyson and Wendy Knight, Buddy Hield, Ed Fields and Nancy Kelly.

According to Minister Ferreira, the 10 new super heroes will be winners who would have completed the best jobs, made the most impact on their streets, neighborhoods or schools, and gained the largest followings on social media.
