Nassau, The Bahamas  - The National Training Agency (NTA) is conducting registration February 2-6 at its Gladstone Road facility and at Urban Renewal Centres in New Providence.  Already 200 persons have taken advantage of early registration.  Basic entry level, marketable, skills are offered to young people aged 16-26.

To date the agency has trained over 1,400 young people total in New Providence, Grand Bahama and Exuma since classes were launched in New Providence soon after NTA located to Gladstone Road in July 2013.

Areas of basic training include: Food and Beverage, Butler Service, Housekeeping, Auto Service and Care, Bookkeeping, Allied Health Care, Boating Safety and Maintenance, Food Preparation, Quickbooks Accounting, Retail Knowledge, Customer Service.

The most popular area of training is Allied Health Care because it provides trainees with dual certification [Patient Care Technician and Patient Care Assistant] that is internationally and locally recognized, provides trainees with a higher opportunity for employment, and the training would have been very expensive if trainees had to pay for it on their own.

Other popular areas of instruction are Food & Beverage and Housekeeping -- mainly because trainees receive international certification from City & Guilds of London, and the chances of employment in these areas are also great.

The NTA reports that students have commented they are grateful to the Agency for giving them a second chance: especially after having wasted time in school and other personal challenges that they may have faced.  They appreciate the provision of workforce skills that boost their confidence and put them in a better position to find gainful employment.

The Agency begins its fourth cohort of training in New Providence and is about to launch in Eleuthera.  Preliminary groundwork is being laid in Abaco.  And it is preparing to launch its Institute of Leadership and Professional Management later this year geared towards supervisors and persons in management positions who desire competency-based training.

The NTA is established as a legislated autonomous body -- stakeholder driven and facilitating co-operation among industry partners, employers and employers’ organizations, the business community, civil society, training institutions and programs, Urban Renewal 2.0 and the government.

NTA operates a competency-based education and training (CBET) system, flexible and responsive to the actual requirements of the workplace. Competency-based education and training incorporates the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes into the workforce preparation activity. Competencies are based on the specific requirements of various occupations and conform to industry standards.

Delivery of training is accomplished via a network of suitable and approved training providers (institutions, organizations, and programs) involved in the process of supplying qualified and skilled labour for The Bahamas.

The operation of the NTA also provides for the allowance of job creation through training and employment schemes including internships, special job projects, entrepreneurial opportunities and the expansion of a modernized national apprenticeship program in keeping with the government’s policy on apprenticeship training.
