NASSAU, The Bahamas – Secretary General of the UN International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Houlin Zhao declared New Providence “the world’s first Smart Island” in a Special Presentation, April 11, 2016.

Mr. Zhao made the announcement as a guest speaker during the launch of the “National Development Plan Report” at The College of The Bahamas Monday evening.

He made the proclamation the day of his arrival in Nassau, and met with the Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie in a Courtesy Call on Tuesday, April 12.

Like Smart, Sustainable Cities, the Smart Island adopts sustainable means of managing infrastructural complexities, with the utilization of modern technologies, in order to improve quality of life for residents.
