NASSAU, Bahamas -- The implementation of a one-way traffic scheme for Baillou Hill Road and Market Street will result in improvements to the safety and traffic flow on the New Providence Road network, said Minister of Public Works and Transport the Hon Neko C Grant.
“These works will improve
road pavement, improve the drainage and street lighting and provide
for proper sidewalks, improved signage and road markings,” Mr Grant
said.
He announced the implementation
of the one-way system for Baillou Hill Road and Market Street during
a press conference at the Ministry of Works and Transport, Thompson
Boulevard, Monday, March 8.
The new system is a part of the Government's New Providence Road Improvement Project that is being funded by the Inter-American Development Bank. The Government of The Bahamas signed a $120 million contract with Jose Cartellone Construction Civiles Construction of Argentina for new road corridors, reconstruction of existing road corridors and improvements to major intersections.
“Phase one of the one-way
system for Baillou Hill Road and Market Street will be implemented on
Tuesday, March 30, 2010,” said Mr Grant. “Baillou Hill Road will
be one-way northbound and Market Street will be one-way southbound between
Robinson Road and Wulff Road.
He noted that subsequent phases of the road-works on Baillou Hill Road will continue from Wulff Road to Duke Street and as the work progresses northward, the one-way couplet for Baillou Hill Road will also advance northward.
On completion of the
road-works Baillou Hill Road will be one-way north from Robinson Road
to Duke Street and Market Street will be one-way south from Shirley
Street to Robinson Road.
He pointed out that the
contractor is required to provide access to neighbouring properties
and is only allowed to work in 1500-ft sections of Baillou Hill Road
at any time.
Bus routes along the
affected routes will be amended to suit the new one-way scheme.
Mr Grant urged the cooperation of motorists, business owners and residents, particularly those in the immediate surroundings of the project.
“Although some level
of inconvenience might be encountered during this and the remaining
phases of the road-works, I wish to assure the public that access will
be provided (to the greatest extent possible) to the project area,”
Mr Grant said.
“I encourage motorists
to drive safely and sensibly when navigating through the road-works
and to pay attention to and obey the temporary traffic diversions and
other traffic management measures. Care must be taken when approaching
the construction zones, especially in the vicinity of schools and pedestrian
crossings.”
He thanked the Royal
Bahamas Police Force, the Road Traffic Department, Transport Planning
and Policy Unit and the utility companies for their assistance and continued
support throughout the project.
