The Pharmacy Department at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) is launching a new program for prescription refills for chronic illness medications. The new program which commences on 1st July 2020 utilizes the popular social media platform WhatsApp and allows patients in high risk demographics, such as persons with non-communicable diseases and the elderly, to refill their medications safely.  The new four-step process  seeks to eliminate crowding  in the Hospital’s Pharmacy Area in keeping with social distancing protocols.

The process requires that persons WhatsApp their names, prescription number (Rx) and medical records number (MRN), which are all found on  their prescription label. Once the information has been sent via WhatsApp, a reply will be given within 24 hours indicating a date and time to collect the prescription within two (2) to three (3) days. Clients filling prescriptions are asked to return old medication packets when collecting refills.

Clients sending photos of their prescription labels will not have their requests honoured. Following the simple four-step process which identifies the client, prescription number and medical records number allows for efficient processing of refills for chronic illness medications.

The Four Steps are:

Step One -  Add the PMH Pharmacy's WhatsApp number to your phone. The number is 424-3642.

Step Two - On your refill label, you will see your Rx or Prescription Number and your MRN or Medical Record Number. WhatsApp your name and these two numbers to the number provided. Remember, each label has a different Rx number, so every time you need a prescription refill you will need to ensure the correct number is sent.

Step Three – Once you have submitted your information via WhatsApp you will receive a response from the PMH Pharmacy within 24 hours.  A scheduled pickup date and time will be given - which will be two to three days later.

Step Four - Bring your old medication packages with you when collecting the refills.  Your name will be given to the front desk to ensure that there is no confusion when you arrive to collect your medication.

The PHA thanks the public for their continued support during this time. Further announcements and updates on hospital services will be disseminated as it becomes necessary.
