Nassau, Bahamas - The Bahamas - While speaking at the 17th Annual National Public Service Week Awards Luncheon, on February 12, 2017, at Atlantis, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Rt. Hon Perry Christie said that all are aware that the bureaucracy of the Government is the most complex, diverse and important entity in The Bahamas and it is a fact that the competence, productivity and accountability of those who work for the Government will affect the quality of life for all citizens.

"With this said, it is critical that the Public Service attract the brightest and best persons with the highest ethical standards if it is to achieve its goal of creating a stronger Bahamas," Prime Minister Christie said.

Prime Minister Christie noted that as he perused the list of retirees for the last fiscal year 2015 to 2016, he was impressed that almost 50 percent of them had given 40 years or more in service to "this country of ours."

"Forty years, ladies and gentlemen, is a generation; a generation during which we have experienced more rapid changes in the world than probably any other time in recorded history, particularly in the areas of communication, transportation and technology," he said.

Prime Minister Christie pointed out that some of the retirees served in remote settlements in the Family Islands that were difficult to reach except by mail boat and ferry, and in some cases families were left in Nassau.

"This was the environment in which our retirees worked tirelessly to bring The Bahamas to the place where it is today," he said.  "It meant that they had to be flexible and engage in constant learning and sharpening of skills in order to respond appropriately to their clients, and were required to do so with antiquated laws and irrelevant procedures."

"Those of us who come behind enjoy the benefits of the sacrifices that they made," he added.  "On behalf of the Government and people of The Bahamas, I offer our sincere gratitude to you, Retirees, for having chosen the Public Service as your life-long career and for your contributions during your tenure in the Service."
