NASSAU, The Bahamas – In a State-Recognized Funeral for former Senator Telator Cumi Strachan on Friday, August 17, 2018, Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Hubert A. Minnis described the straw businessperson as a loyal and dedicated nation builder.

“She was a woman of service to her family, her church and her country,” the Prime Minister said as he delivered condolences before a packed Faith United Missionary Baptist Church on Faith United Way off Baillou Hill Road.

Also present among Government and Opposition Officials was Her Excellency Dame Marguerite Pindling, Governor General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.  The Eulogy was delivered by Rev. Dr. William Thompson, host pastor.

The Prime Minister recognized Telator Strachan for her love of God, family and country.

“Her exemplary service is a gift to the nation, a gift that is worthy of emulation,” the Prime Minister said.

He said although the congregation was a mixed gathering from various political backgrounds and affiliations, “we are united in recognizing and honouring the life of a noble soul, who devoted her life to the enrichment of the country she loved.”

The Prime Minister quoted the late US Civil Rights Movement leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who said: “Life’s most urgent questions is: What are you doing for others?”  He said, Telator Strachan answered this question with generosity and passion: “She was a woman of service to her family, her church and her country,” he reiterated.

Others have also recognized in detail, her contributions to society as a family woman and mother, and her contributions to business, particularly the straw industry, and to religious, political and civic life over many decades.

“As a woman of faith and service Telator Strachan also understood well these words of Dr. King, who said when reflecting on the Parable of the Good Samaritan:

“The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: ‘If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?’

“But, the good Samaritan reversed the question: “ ‘If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?’ ”

According to the Prime Minister, Telator Strachan demonstrated great care and compassion for those around her, especially the poor and those in need.

He noted that Melanie Griffin, her daughter, also exhibited such care for those in need, when she served as a Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament.

Recalling the early years of Telator Strachan, the Prime Minister said that the men and women of her generation took up the cause of equality with dedication and courage.

“Her generation played an essential and leading role in the political development of a sovereign independent Bahamas,” he said.

Telator Strachan died on Monday, July 30, 2018. She was 85.

“She now resides with the God whom she loved and the ancestors whom she revered, who now, along with the angels and saints, greet her into her new heavenly home.

“May we all find inspiration in her witness and legacy.  May she rest in peace,” the Prime Minister said.
