NASSAU, The Bahamas – Construction of bridges and roadworks, repairs to major government buildings and causeways and upgrades of major thoroughfares in New Providence are among the Government’s infrastructural development plans for 2018 and 2019.
To this end, the Ministry has embarked on a fact-finding mission to inspect and determine how best to plan the way forward in addressing infrastructural needs. Representatives of the Ministry have visited Grand Bahama, Eleuthera, Abaco, Exuma and the Cays, North and Central Andros and Long island. Visits will also be made to other Family Islands.
Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works, Iram Lewis, said the government is “committed” to “significant” infrastructural work during the next fiscal period as he revealed the plans during the first Contractor’s Seminar recently put on by the Ministry of Public Works.
The Parliamentary Secretary said his Ministry’s budget includes engineering studies to address the Glass Window Bridge in Eleuthera, and a budgetary remit for the Ministry of Tourism to ensure that the airports in Exuma, Long Island and North Eleuthera receive attention “long overdue.”
Moreover, throughout The Bahamas, a school repair programme will commence shortly creating opportunities for local contractors to be engaged in renovations and refurbishment.
Furthermore, there are plans to construct a new primary school in southwest New Providence and a new primary school in Gregory Town, Eleuthera.
Mr. Lewis admonished the contractors, some of whom are female, to remain current in the field and aware of best practices in the industry.
He said it is hoped that various aspects of all new construction will incorporate emerging technologies including green solutions and renewable energy.
He noted that provisions have been made to hire young people in the government summer programme who are interested in careers in the following fields: construction management, quantity surveying, architecture, plumbing, carpentry, air-condition technology, electrical work, engineering, and drafting.
He urged the contractors to participate in all information sessions offered by the Ministry, and take advantage of government agencies that provide information.
