Freeport, Grand Bahama, The Bahamas - His Excellency, Ambassador C.A. Smith (left) received the first copy of this year’s Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year booklet, presented to him on Monday, May 27, 2019 at his office in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, by Ivan Deveaux, Senior Special Assistant and Chief of Staff to the president of the Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year Organization.

In receiving the booklet, Ambassador Smith congratulated the Board of Directors of the Primary School Student of the Year program for excellent job they have done over the years in presenting the program.  “I thank them for doing so much to ensure that our young people have an opportunity to get a first class education,” said Ambassador Smith.  “Our country of tomorrow is going to be dependent on what kind of educational opportunities are available to our young people. The future of The Bahamas will surely be dependent on the quality of students that graduate from our schools.  After all, it is they who will make our country the technological centre that it ought to be.”

Ambassador Smith, non-resident Ambassador of The Bahamas to Panama, also used the opportunity to encourage more sponsors to be a part of the programme, so that even more students can receive more opportunities to advance their education.

The Primary School Student of the Year Award was formed in 1997 and, according to Mr. Deveaux, up to this year the organization has given close to $2 million dollars in scholarships to primary school students.  Grand Bahamian students have won the overall prize for four years since the inception of the program.
