NASSAU, The Bahamas – Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie officially opened a community health clinic in Adelaide village on Friday, November 20, 2015 providing more accessible healthcare delivery to residents of the remote community in the southwest of New Providence.

The Prime Minister noted the challenges of healthcare delivery on archipelagoes like The Bahamas and the valuable role of nurses. As a former Minister of Health, he said if an island has a doctor, it's a bonus: we owe so much to our nurses.

"Sixteen main island health facilities, and seven cays with varying levels of healthcare providers.  When a government has to do that -- separated by expansions of oceans -- it means you have to rely heavily, particularly on those nurses, who are out there, who are called upon to be all things to all people."

He said: "We are in the process of examining our system of healthcare delivery.  Unlike other countries in the world, other countries in this region -- there are some countries in this world, like The Bahamas, a chain of islands -- but unlike any in this region, we have the responsibility of providing services for people in about 16 islands, where they have clinics; Extraordinary."

The Prime Minister said: "We are embarked now on an extraordinary exercise.  We are committing ourselves, having spent $100 Million dollars, as a country, on the Critical Care block at the Princess Margaret Hospital -- we are in the process of redesigning, recalibrating the appearance, the functioning in terms of service of the Princess Margaret Hospital, the Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport, the mini hospitals in our islands of Abaco and Exuma, the clinics in our islands.  All of them being made ready for National Health Insurance, giving stronger and more consistent services to the people who will avail themselves.”

The Prime Minister was accompanied in the celebration by Minister of Health the Hon. Dr. Perry Gomez, Minister for Grand Bahama the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville, State Minister for Finance the Hon. Michael Halkitis, and State Minister for National Security Senator the Hon. Keith Bell, along with a team of senior government officials.

Prime Minister Christie acknowledged Dr. Thomas Smith, Government Psychiatrist, whose mother owned the home where the Government renovated the structure into a community clinic.  He also stated that the government wants people to help themselves stay healthy and free of non- communicable diseases like diabetes and heart disease.   He then declared the clinic opened.
