Freeport, Grand Bahama – Prime Minister Perry Christie was in Freeport on Monday, June 30, participating in the official opening of Immerse Bahamas.

Immerse Bahamas was described as a full service destination and project management company and is headed by Ms Ginger Moxey, former vice president of the Grand Bahama Port Authority.

Ms. Moxey is also the founder of 700 partners, a non profit organisation that involves a coming together of the Government and people of The Bahamas, and people from everywhere in the spirit of culture immersion.

It is the goal of 700 Partners through Immerse Bahamas to make The Bahamas a preferred destination in the People to People International Ambassador programme, where groups travel to various destinations around the world for cultural, tourism and educational exchanges.

Prime Minister Christie told the gathering assembled for the opening in Churchill Square, downtown, that “Ginger has created a company that could do anything, everything, for anybody, for everybody.”

Mr. Christie encouraged Ms. Moxey to pursue her dreams and to recognise that when she is dealing with international associations for The Bahamas, that that in itself carries a large amount of responsibility.

He said that Immerse Bahamas is deeply involve with the travel industry and that he still questions what it is that Grand Bahama has to do to brand itself for people who could be attracted to the tourism side of it.

“This becomes particular important as the Government of The Bahamas begins the process of wrestling with the decisions that we have to make by next year with respect to real property tax in particular.

“I have already demonstrated to meet with the partners in Grand Bahama and enter into a memorandum of understanding and roll back taxes in consideration of an expansion of various industries including the Container Port, and I see where an announcement has been made about others recently who have been expanding their business,” he said.

Mr. Christie said he has discussed with the Minister for Grand Bahama that having completed the Annual Budget, the government wants to bring particular focus to the economy of Grand Bahama.

“If you are cynical you can look at it as just political promises but I am here to tell you that they were not just empty words,” he stated.

Mr. Christie made reference to the more than 6.3 million visitors to the country last year, stating that the nation is poised and determined to reclaim its regional dominance in tourism, with consequential spin-offs for businesses such as Immerse Bahamas.

The Prime Minister also make it clear that because of its obligation to Freeport, the Grand Bahama Port Authority and its partners has to do much more for the island, as well as the Government.
