Nassau, The Bahamas -- The Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries, Regatta Division, joined organizers of ‘Sir Durward Knowles 100 Regatta,’ along with the Bahamas Olympic Association (BOA), Bahamas Sailing Association (BSA), the National Family Island Regatta (NFIR), ‘One Bahamas’ Foundation, and the Sailing Association Commodores and Sailors at Nassau Yacht Club on Friday evening, October 27, to celebrate the historic occasion of the Sir Durward Knowles 100 Regatta.

As the sun set on the poolside celebration overlooking Montagu Foreshore and Marina, Minister of Agriculture & Fisheries the Hon. Renward Wells addressed the dozens of supporters who came out to wish the benevolent “Sir Durward” a Happy 100th Birthday, as well.

On behalf of the nation, Minister Wells expressed gratitude to Sir Durward or ‘Sea Wolf,’ reminding him that his passion and generosity will never be forgotten.

Minister Wells said: “You are a national hero.  It is not often that one lives to witness a nation affirm his life as legendary.  You are blessed beyond measure. You are our first Olympic gold medalist (with Cecil Cooke), our most ardent sailor, our philanthropist, our humanitarian.  It seems that you have been and remain involved in almost every aspect of our Bahamian society.

“You are days away from becoming a centenarian; entering yet another phase of your life.  Indeed, age is nothing but a number.  My prayer is that you live to enjoy some more good years being showered with the love of family and friends; and that you know that we appreciate you.”

Minister Wells concluded by thanking Sir Durward for a lifetime gift of service above self for the building of The Bahamas.  He then turned to the crowd and announced that even in his advanced years, Sir Durward is still doing big things for the country.

“On behalf of the Government and behalf of a grateful people, on behalf of the boat owners, captains and crews, and on my own behalf, with your family, we will celebrate your achievement when the sloops stir the waters at Montagu Bay.  The enthusiasm of the sailors has been phenomenal and they are here for you!  God bless you, Sir Durward!  Happy Birthday!  Let the fun begin!”

Others who also joined the celebration were Wellington Miller, BOA Chairman; Lori Lowe, President of the BSA & Co-Chair of the Sir Durward Knowles 100 Regatta; Danny Strachan, Chairman of the NFIR & Co-Chair of the Sir Durward Knowles 100 Regatta; and Peter Bates, Chairman of ‘One Bahamas’ Foundation.
