NASSAU, The Bahamas -- The Bahamas laid out the Red Carpet to welcome Prince Harry who is representing his grandmother Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, as she celebrates her Diamond Jubilee year.
Prince Harry, 27, arrived in
the capital Nassau, Saturday, March 3, on board his aircraft which touched
down at the Odyssey Aviation Bahamas at the Lynden Pindling International
Airport at 7p.m.
He visited Belize another Commonwealth
Country prior to coming here. He leaves Monday, March 5 for Jamaica.
At the airport Prince Harry
was greeted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs
the Hon Brent Symonette; Secretary to the Cabinet Anita Bernard;
Minister of National Security the Hon Tommy Turnquest, Minister of Education
the Hon Desmond Bannister, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture the
Hon Charles Maynard, Honorary Consul for the United Kingdom Peter Young
and other dignitaries.
As he disembarked his aircraft,
he was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Selandia Toote, Queen’s
College student who achieved the highest honours in the 2011 Bahamas
Junior Certificate examinations.
Prince Harry, attended by the
Bahamian Equerry was then escorted to the Saluting Base by the Provost
Marshall and the Commodore of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, where
a Royal Salute was given by the Guard of Honour under the command of
Superintendent of Police Kevin Rolle.
The National Anthem, March
on Bahamaland was played by the Royal Bahamas Police Force Band, followed
by an Inspection of the Guard of Honour by His Royal Highness. He then
returned to the Saluting Base, received another Royal Salute from the
Guard of Honour and then took leave of the Officer of the Guard.
He was then escorted to his
vehicle and taken in motorcade to the British Colonial Hilton at # 1
Bay Street.
On Sunday, Prince Harry paid a Courtesy Call on His Excellency Sir Arthur Foulkes, Governor-General and Joan Lady Foulkes at Government House on Mount Fitzwilliam. Also present were the Rt Hon Hubert Ingraham, Prime Minister and Mrs Delores Ingraham; Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs the Hon Brent Symonette; former Governors-General Sir Orville Turnquest, Dame Ivy Dumont and the Hon Arthur Hanna; President of the Senate the Hon Lynn Holowesko; and Speaker of the House of Assembly the Hon Alvin Smith.
There was an exchange of gifts;
The Governor General and the Prime Minister presented two pieces of
art work depicting Bahamian scenery. And Prince Harry gave two signed
photographs of himself.
After a serving of afternoon
tea, Prince Harry was taken in motorcade to attend a Service of Morning
Prayer at Christ Church Cathedral, George Street.
