Remarks by The Honorable Damian Gomez Member Of Parliament For Central and South Eleuthera Mid-Year Budget Presentation 2014/2015 18th February 2015; House Of Assembly Nassau, Bahamas:

INTRODUCTION

Mr. Speaker, I have the honor to present on behalf of the good people of south and central Eleuthera. Mr. Speaker as we approach the budget year we approach noting with certainty that our economy is moving in the right direction. We have seen that the roll out of vat was not all doom and gloom as the members opposite would have you believe. We have seen that the regularization of the gaming industry has not resulted in the doom and gloom forecasted by members opposite. We have seen Mr. Speaker that our country is in a much better position than it was this time three years ago.

The problem we have is that members of the opposition seem to forget the shambles that they left our economy in. they seem to forget how fragile the Bahamian economy was under their leadership and how destitute the Bahamian people had become under their government. Mr. Speaker, we can not blame them as we acknowledge that during prosperous times people tend to forget. And Mr. Speaker it is characteristic of the members opposite to spread gloom and doom because that is what they bring anytime they come to this house. Gloom and doom. It is confusing how they tend to see the fiscal reforms, the liberalization of sectors in our economy, new investments opportunities and innovative and new cultural products as “gloom and doom”.

Mr. speaker, we have done what was difficult and unpopular, we have made decisions as a Government which have been micro-analyzed and critiqued and Mr. speaker even though a lot of hot air has been blown we are still on our way towards a balanced budget and that Mr. speaker is what is amazing about this government. We don’t have to doll up the numbers either the fact of the matter is that all of those unpopular decisions, particularly in terms of taxation will begin to pay dividend to the welfare of each and every Bahamian...
