Nassau, The Bahamas - “The government of The Bahamas is committed to refocusing on Literacy, Numeracy, Oracy and Cognitive Skills, those basics that were once the cornerstone of a primary school education,” said Minister of Education the Hon. Jeffrey Lloyd.

“Along with these basic learning tools, we are also committed to focusing on the social and emotional values and training of our youngest minds,” said the Minister during the Ministry of Education’s national public school’s administrators two-day conclave under the theme ‘Empowered to Serve; Shaping the Finished Product,’ at Melia Nassau Beach resort.

It is the commitment of this government to mandate by law, when capacities are available, that all 2.5 to 3 year olds must be in a Ministry of Education approved pre-school programme to ensure that all children have access to quality pre-school programme.

Minister Lloyd said the government is committing $2 million in the 2017-2018 budget for the introduction of a pilot programme, which will provide tablets for each student to be used for the delivery of instruction, in two New Providence pre-schools, in keeping with this mandate to enhance pre-school education along with increasing the use of technology in the pre-school classroom.

Increased funding, additional early childhood trained staff, and appropriate facilities will also be provided in the upcoming year and years to come to provide universal quality pre-school education and to ensure that minimum early childhood standards are met, said Minister Lloyd.
