Tsunami Readiness Exercise, CaribeWave18 Held in Bahamas

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) held a Tsunami Readiness Exercise dubbed, “CaribeWave18” on Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 10:00am until 4:00p.m.

The Tsunami Exercise is conducted yearly in the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands under the direction of UNESCO and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) located in Hawaii.

The objective of CaribeWave18 is to validate preparedness response to tsunamis (that is test protocols and communication systems between tsunami warning centres and the tsunami warning focal points)

The Bahamas will test all communication systems throughout the country, and that of the Royal Bahamas Police Force Communications inclusive of:

  • Family Islands where the following systems will be tested through
     Landlines

     Cell phones

     E-mails

     Facsimiles

Bahamas Information Services will coordinate the dissemination of information to all media houses encompassing the following:
  •     The Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (ZNS)
  •     All Radio & Television Stations
  •     BTC
  •     Aliv
  •     Social Media
The public was informed as of Wednesday, March 14, 2018 of the Tsunami Exercise to ensure that persons were aware that the alerts are not real threats but a simulation exercise.  All disseminated messages read THIS IS A TEST to ensure that persons do not panic.
