The United Special Rapporteur on Right to Education,
Mr. Kishore Singh, paid a courtesy call on H. E. Rhoda M. Jackson at
The Bahamas Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office in Geneva.
Mr. Singh, appointed in his personal capacity by the Human Rights
Council in 2010, is mandated to engage in constructive dialogue with
Governments, civil society and other stakeholders with a view to finding
solutions for the implementation of the right to education and report
to the Council when appropriate. Other areas of focus for the Special
Rapporteur include, inter alia, education in emergency situations,
financing education, education quality standards and school respect for
human rights.
Of particular interest to The
Bahamas is the work undertaken by Special Rapporteur Singh, in
addressing "quality imperatives in education with a focus on skills
development for responding to rising aspirations of youth." It was
noted that this area of focus complements that of the upcoming meeting
of Commonwealth Education Ministers meeting scheduled to be hosted by
The Bahamas
22 - 26 June, 2015, under the theme "Quality Education for Equitable Development Performance, Paths and Productivity."
Mr.
Singh has addressed Conferences of Ministers of Education of the
Francophone countries, the UNESCO African Ministers of Education, among
other international education conferences.
Ambassador
Jackson expressed appreciation to the Special Rapporteur for the
courtesy call and reiterated The Bahamas' commitment to improving the
education sector in The Bahamas with respect to leadership, teacher
training and achievement unit with emphasis on special and inclusive
education.
