Nassau, The Bahamas – United States Chargé d’Affaires Lisa Johnson, who is attached to the United States Embassy in The Bahamas, paid a Courtesy Call on Captain Stephen Russell, Director of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, and staff members at the Churchill Building, September 3, 2014.

She was accompanied by CDR Sam Wartell, Senior Defense Attaché, United States Embassy.

Captain Russell explained the role of NEMA under the Disaster Preparedness and Response Act, and the mandate of Government agencies to be a part of the standing national disaster committee to respond to any disaster natural or man-made.

He also explained The Bahamas’ membership, through NEMA, in the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency CDEMA, which is comprised of CARICOM member states. NEMA would be able to tap into resources to advance its programme of militating against disasters and building resilient communities.

He also spoke of NEMA’s relationship and partnership with the United States Agency for International Development/Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA), the US Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and the Pacific Disaster Centre in Hawaii, in terms of training specifically in various disaster protocols and water rescue exercises.
NEMA is the Government agency charged with responsibility for disaster relief management.
