Marion Bethel Addresses the UN Bureau of Women's Affairs

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Newly-elected committee member of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), Marion Bethel addressed the monthly meeting of the Bureau of Women's Affairs, a division of the Ministry of Social Services and Community Development, September 15, 2016.   In her address of the Bureau, Mrs. Bethel discussed CEDAW, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1979, and petitions nations around the world to adjust national policies to end discrimination against women, and promote equality between the sexes. The Government of The Bahamas signed on the Convention in l993.  Mrs. Bethel was elected on June 21 of this year to sit on the CEDAW Committee, and was one of 11 new international experts, elected for two years as of January 1, 2017 from a slate of 25 candidates, who will work to monitor implementation of the Convention around the world.   She is pictured addressing the Bureau.  (BIS Photo/Patrick Hanna).
