Nassau, Bahamas - The following is a Water and Sewage Update as of 6pm Saturday, October 8th following Hurricane Matthew for Nassau and the Family Islands:

WSC 10AM UPDATE: Family Islands Water Supply Status on Saturday October 09th 2016

Water supplies throughout the Family Islands were generally maintained wherever stand-by power facilities were present, or power supply was uninterrupted. Challenges still exist in the following areas:

Andros
Central: numerous communities without service due to power supply disruptions; portable gensets and restoration crews being deployed for temporary relief.

North Andros: significant damage and flooding in pumping station; Restoration crews deployed 07/08-Oct and system partially restored (25%). Water for community available at pumping station site.

Eleuthera
Limited operations in North due to power supply challenges
Exuma and the Cays:

Farmers Cay off due to power disruption

Great Harbour Cay: no contact

Inagua: limited supply until power restoration allows full production
Customers in areas not listed above, and who are experiencing less than normal service levels, should call WSC offices and register their complaint

The Corporation appreciates your patience as we all work to rebuild our facilities and systems following the passage of Hurricane Matthew.

6PM Saturday, October 8th:

NEW PROVIDENCE

STAFF: Emergency staff were on duty throughout Hurricane at WSC Ministry of Works and Blue Hills compounds; no reports of any injuries to staff on/off duty

WATER SUPPLY: water supply maintained throughout Hurricane Matthew; Windsor desalination plant suffered major roof damage which resulted in damage to some of the plant’s electronic equipment and it is anticipated that this plant will resume operations on Saturday Oct 08th; catastrophic failure of generator at Windsor late Friday night affecting 25% of island; Reduced service to several areas being experienced as a result WSC expects to source suitably sized portable generator locally and have normal service restored as quickly as possible. Blue Hills (BH) desalination plant is operational and producing at 90% of max. capacity;  supplies from BH expanded as a result of Windsor generator failure but cannot meet full island demand; generator at BH also experiencing challenges affecting remaining 75% of island but this has been temporarily resolved; WSC working closely with BPL to restore normal power to these critical facilities.  Service to non-essential areas has been reduced.

SEWERAGE: There are over 100 sewerage liftstations fully dependent on BPL’s power supply; WSC teams began assessments and operations of these liftstations using portable generators Friday (Oct 07th) and this will continue thru the weekend.
CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS: The majority of our customer complaints are related to damaged water lines to customer properties by trees being uprooted; these complaints are being aggressively addressed.  Also, customers who normally use private wells and only kept their city water supply as a backup are experiencing some challenges; these complaints are also being promptly addressed.  There are a few isolated cases of sewage overflows and these are always given priority attention when received.

BUILDINGS/OFFICE FACILITIES: no major structural damage; some minor water damage but operations will be able to resume quickly
