NASSAU, The Bahamas – Centreville Urban Renewal kicked off its summer programme in July at Our Lady’s Church Hall on East and Deveaux Streets.

Some 150 students between the ages of 7-14 are participating in the six-week programme, which has as its theme “Capturing Discipline through Culture.”

Welcoming the children, ASP Marino Hinds, guest speaker, shared a moving story of his humble beginnings, growing up in a one-room home which he shared with six other family members: “Where you start doesn’t determine where you finish. If you have discipline, you can accomplish great things,” he said.

He urged the children to obey their parents, teachers, instructors and older siblings. He said it is “imperative” that they exercise discipline in everything and if they don’t there will be consequences.

Throughout the six weeks the youngsters will learn how to beat the Goat Skin Drum and how to build Junkanoo costumes. They will also participate in dance and basketball lessons, and educational field trips.
