FREEPORT, Grand Bahama - Young people in Grand Bahama were encouraged by Senior Undersecretary of the Ministry for Grand Bahama, Harcourt Brown, to take full advantage of the opportunity presented to them during the 4th Grand Bahama Industrial, Technical and Maritime Career Fair.

Mr. Brown's remarks came during the press conference to announce the event on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Our Lucaya, where the Career Fair was held on Friday.

He said, "We live in a world where today, ILO statistics indicate that youth unemployment throughout, across the board in many countries, double that of the regular unemployment statistics. So it's safe to say that our youth are very very challenged; and when you are able to come up with stakeholders and industry partners coming together to put on an event like this, we have to encourage youth and parents to take full advantage of what these good folk who have taken time away from their busy schedules to be here, have to offer.

"It's extremely important for the parents to be supportive and the guidance counselors will do their part. But, we certainly applaud all of you who are taking time to just do this. It's so important to the young people of our country.

"We've just gone through a very, very trying period with Hurricane Matthew, and of course, we've had to import a lot of labour to help us get over the hump. Labour that otherwise, could be available right here to us.

"Grand Bahama happens to be the only island where we can do what we are doing today. It's the only island because when it comes to industrial undertakings, [there’s] the level of diversity that we have. And so, you are to be congratulated, all of the stakeholder partners, and we certainly want the young people to take full advantage of this opportunity."

Also present during the press conference were: Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville who officially launched the event; Sherlock Prince of BTVI; Gerron Turnquest, Bradford Marine; Lance Brown, Bahama Rock; Dudley Francis, Grand Bahama Port Authority; and Don Forbes, Grand Bahama Shipyard.’

The companies represented during the event held for high school students in Grand Bahama were: Bahamian Brewery, Bahamas National Trust, Bahama Rock Ltd., Bradford Marines, BTVI, Freeport Container Port, Freeport Harbour Company, Grand Bahama Airport Company, Grand Bahama Health Services, Grand Bahama Port Authority, Grand Bahama Power Company, Grand Bahama Utility Company, Grand Bahama Shipyard Company, Pharmachem Technology GB Ltd., Pineyard Steel, Quality Services, The Royal Bahamas Defence Force and The Royal Bahamas Police Force.

The event was expected to attract some 520 students.
