RT. HON. HUBERT A. INGRAHAM

PRIME MINISTER

19 November 2009

Nassau, Bahamas - In accordance with the provisions of the new Police Force Act, Commissioner of Police Reginald Ferguson will retire on January 4, 2010.  Mr. Ferguson, now 63 years old, will be past the retirement age of 60 stipulated in the new Act.

He has given long, dedicated and honourable service to the Royal Bahamas Police Force and to The Bahamas for more than four decades, having joined the Force in 1965.

Mr. Ferguson worked his way up through the ranks over the years maintaining his integrity and gaining the respect and trust of fellow officers as well as the community.

He was appointed Commissioner on 16 March, 2009 having acted in the post since 21 November, 2007. In that short time, he has presided over continuing improvements and innovations as the Force continues its service to the Bahamian people in maintaining law and order and facing the severe challenges presented by criminal elements.

On behalf of the Government and people of The Bahamas, I sincerely thank Mr. Ferguson for his long and distinguished service and wish him success in his future endeavours.

The process for the appointment of a new Commissioner of Police in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, and the new Police Act, will now be initiated and an announcement to that effect will be made in due course.
