Statement by Bahamas' Prime Minister on the Retirement of COP Reginald Ferguson

STATEMENT

Nassau, Bahamas - In accordance
with the provisions of the new Police Force Act, Commissioner of Police
Reginald Ferguson will retire on January 4, 2010. Mr. Ferguson,
now 63 years old, will be past the retirement age of 60 stipulated in
the new Act.
He has given
long, dedicated and honourable service to the Royal Bahamas Police Force
and to The Bahamas for more than four decades, having joined the Force
in 1965.
Mr. Ferguson
worked his way up through the ranks over the years maintaining his integrity
and gaining the respect and trust of fellow officers as well as the
community.
He was appointed
Commissioner on 16 March, 2009 having acted in the post since 21 November,
2007. In that short time, he has presided over continuing improvements
and innovations as the Force continues its service to the Bahamian people
in maintaining law and order and facing the severe challenges presented
by criminal elements.
On behalf of
the Government and people of The Bahamas, I sincerely thank Mr. Ferguson
for his long and distinguished service and wish him success in his future
endeavours.
The process
for the appointment of a new Commissioner of Police in accordance with
the provisions of the Constitution, and the new Police Act, will now
be initiated and an announcement to that effect will be made in due
course.
