Belize to host the 6th Biennial CAJO Conference

The Honourable Mr Justice Peter Jamadar, CAJO’s interim Chairman will host his first Biennial Conference at the end of October in Belize, having assumed leadership of the Association earlier this year.

PORT OF SPAIN - The 6th Biennial Caribbean Association of Judicial Officers (CAJO) Conference will be held during the period October 31st- November 2nd at the Biltmore Plaza Hotel, Belize City, Belize. The Conference will be held under the theme “Judicial Integrity – The Pathway to Public Trust and Confidence”.  Interim Chairman of CAJO, and Judge at the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), the Honourable Mr Justice Peter Jamadar stated “this year’s Conference promises to surpass the expectations of attendees. Our team of panelists is first-rate and features renowned regional jurists as well as representatives from as far as Europe and Africa”. The Conference, which will feature approximately 20 sessions, will explore areas such as the rights of indigenous persons, developments in the rule of law of the Caribbean, pre-trial detention and judicial reform, in addition to other topical issues.  

The Association, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, is one of the region’s main providers of judicial education for Caribbean judicial officers. The Conference brings together Chief Justices, Judges, Magistrates, Masters, Registrars and Executive Court Administrators aimed at creating an environment where both regional practitioners and academics can discuss emerging areas of law, best practices and new ideas for improving the delivery of justice throughout the region.

This year’s Conference will feature two keynote addresses. The first would be by Mr Terrence Farrell. Mr Farrell has served in numerous capacities throughout his career including Director of Research and Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago. The second keynote presenter is Ms Roberta Clarke who currently serves as the Chair of the Executive Committee of the International Commission of Jurists. Ms Clarke is also the President of the Coalition against Domestic Violence in Trinidad and Tobago. 

The Conference will also be accompanied by a meeting of the Conference of Caribbean Chief Justices and Heads of Judiciaries, who will convene to discuss areas such as the use and impact of artificial intelligence on the adjudication process, judicial reform and regional capacity building initiatives.
