BRIDGETOWN, Barbados  - The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), the region's tourism development agency, has announced new dates for the Climate Smart Sustainable Tourism Forum, 12 - 13 December 2017, at the Ocean Terrace Inn in St. Kitts. Originally scheduled in September, the Forum was put on hold due to the category five hurricanes that impacted a handful of member countries.

Themed "Good For Us, Better For All," the Climate Smart Sustainable Tourism Forum, which is being held in observance of the "International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development," will bring together local, regional, and international representatives from public and private sector tourism entities, as well as development agencies that offer programming in sustainable tourism.

In partnership with member country, St. Kitts, the Climate Smart Sustainable Tourism Forum is designed to enhance attendees' working knowledge of disaster risk reduction and sustainability models, strengthen resiliency through adaption and mitigation strategies, discover solutions that help businesses and destinations thrive, network with sustainability experts and experience specific tools that aid in recovery efforts.

The program will feature the following general sessions:

  •     Tourism Resiliency Through Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation - created to frame the context of future climate conditions in the Caribbean and discuss coastal management, water resourcing, destination/business planning and climate financing.
  •     Innovative Models and Best Practices in Sustainable Tourism - designed to bridge the gap between taking advantage of new market opportunities, while maintaining local authenticity and community engagement.
  •     S.M.A.R.T Destinations: Using Climate as an Opportunity - seeks to identify opportunities for change while showcasing methods to make changes accessible and profitable for destinations and tourism.
  •     The Tourism Recovery Roundtable - provides a platform for destinations to share lessons learned in the wake of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season and showcase rehabilitation efforts.
  •     Roadmap to Disaster Management - charts the process of crafting well-defined disaster management protocols from pre-impact readiness and asset protection, to adequate financial response mechanisms.
A major element of the Forum will take place on 13 December when participants are invited to witness the largest and most inclusive Caribbean Sustainable Tourism Awards ceremony and reception, where regional sustainability champions will be honoured for their responsible and unique practices.

Organizing partners include the CTO, the St. Kitts Ministry of Tourism, the St. Kitts Sustainable Destination Council, and Sustainable Travel International.
