IDB and UB to host early childhood development, social challenges in the Caribbean event

As part of the ongoing collaboration between the Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDB Group) and the University of The Bahamas, we are pleased to announce the regional launch of ‘Development in the Americas’, scheduled for Thursday, February 16, 2017, at the Harry C. Moore Library Auditorium, University of The Bahamas.

The one-day seminar will feature presentations on two of IDB’s flagship publications on social and economic development in the Caribbean and Latin America. Regional public ministries and private institutions have been invited to provide policy perspectives on recent regional and local industry and regulatory developments in sectors related to education, social services, labour and health.

Dr. Rodney Smith, President of the University of The Bahamas and Mrs. Florencia Attademo-Hirt, the IDB’s Country Representative for The Bahamas, will offer welcoming remarks. Mr. Hector Salazar, General Manager of the IDB Group’s Social Sector Department,will give some background and an overview of the value of the two publications to the Caribbean region. The Hon. Melanie Griffin will bring remarks on behalf of the Ministry of Social Services & Community Development.

The Seminar – One day, two publications

The seminar’s main objective will be to introduce two important IDB publications to Caribbean regional audiences: 1) ‘The Early Years: The Child Well-being and the Role of Public Policies’ and 2) ‘Social Pulse in Latin America and the Caribbean’.

‘The Early Years’: The morning presentation will be delivered by Florencia Lopez Boo, IDB’s Social Sector Department, and the author of ‘The Early Years’ publication. This will be followed by a panel discussion from ministries and entities related to education and health. The panel discussion will be moderated by Florencia Attademo-Hirt, and will look at early childhood development initiatives in a Caribbean context.

‘Social Pulse’: The afternoon presentation will be delivered by Ms. Suzanne Duryea, Economist in the IDB’s Social Sector Department, and the author of the ‘Social Pulse’ publication. This will be followed by a panel discussion from ministries and entities related to social services and labour. The panel discussion will be moderated by Therese Turner-Jones, and will look at social initiatives and access to social data in the Caribbean.
