Great Bay, St. Martin - HNP has won the American Graphic Design Award for Plastered in Pretty by N.C. Marks, according to Gordon Kaye, editor and publisher at Graphic Design USA (GDUSA).

Carole Maugé-Lewis designed the winning book cover for the new dystopian novel by Marks, an author from St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The New York City-based GDUSA presented its award to Maugé-Lewis for House of Nehesi Publishers (HNP), said Jacqueline Sample, president of the St. Martin indie press.

From across the USA, “Roughly 10,000 entries were submitted” to the annual design competition and “a highly selective 10% are recognized today – that includes you!” as a GDUSA Award winner 2018, wrote Awards Director Rachel Goldberg in a letter to Mauge-Lewis and HNP.

GDUSA has been spotlighting “excellence and opportunity for creative professionals” in the USA for the last 55 years, said Goldberg. The GDUSA’s American Graphic Design Award magazine has also been “honoring outstanding work of all kinds and across all media,” said Goldberg.

Plastered in Pretty was published here last November. Maugé-Lewis integrated bold colors and the dominant digital art portrait “Dark girl” by Vietnamese illustrator Nguyễn Thanh Nhàn, to design the cover, said Sample. Maugé-Lewis is a professor and Coordinator of Graphic Communication Internships at Kennesaw State University, USA.

Other clients whose designers or agencies were honored in the 2018 competition include the American Bar Association; Mattel, Inc.; Bank of America, Enterprise Creative Solutions; BET Networks; Boston University; PepsiCo Design & Innovation; Dell, Experience Design Group; and Southern Poverty Law Center (bit.ly/2LhF58T).

“Many thanks to Prof. Maugé-Lewis for her stunning design. Thanks to GDUSA for selecting an HNP book among its 2018 awardees; and congratulations to N.C. Marks. I’m happy that she chose to publish Plastered in Pretty with HNP,” said Sample.

The HNP title Language, Culture, and Identity in St. Martin by Rhoda Arrindell is a previous GDUSA Award winner, said Sample.
