Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase 2011 Announced

The Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase Office will be organizing during this year two significant events for the Caribbean Cinema an audiovisual industry in the region, along with the initial phase of the 4th Edition of the Showcase.

1. International Forum: "The Caribbean Diaspora: Challenges of a reality and its images."(St. Kitts & Nevis,  May 9th to 11th, 2011) - In coordination with the Community Cohesion Foundation Inc. and the Ministry of Culture of St. Kitts & Nevis

Space for debate, reflection and dialogue among Caribbean filmmakers (living in the region or being part of the Diaspora) about the realities and perspectives of production, exhibition and distribution of Caribbean cinema focused on the role of Caribbean Diaspora in our regional audiovisual production.

MAIN DISCUSSION TOPICS:

1. Necessary exchange between the creators in the Diaspora and the cinematographic and audiovisual community of their countries. Diaspora filmmakers’ possible roles for the purpose of boosting the Caribbean cinematography development.

2.  The Diaspora and its histories in the cinema.

3.  The cinema and the audiovisual within the identity construction of Diaspora’s children and adolescents.

4.  The Caribbean woman, author and character in our cinema.

5.  Updating of collaboration programs and mechanisms.

6.  Development of co-productions.

 

2.  Encounter of African and Caribbean Filmmakers.  (Havana,  September  2011)

The rich and diverse culture of the vast continent of Africa has nourished the Caribbean region all since millions of African men and women, turned into slaves, unwillingly entered the region as one of the most significant immigration influx in the region.  Much of Africa's cultural presence still enriches our language, music and literature. Cinema, as a mosaic of all arts is the ultimate meeting point between African and Caribbean cultural values and aesthetic referents.

This Encounter of African and Caribbean Filmmakers aims to be an opportunity for mutual learning Extraordinary opportunity for mutual learning and experiences interchange in filmmaking between authors from both regions.

As Africa is currently producing some of the world's finest films, responsive to the genuine needs and aspirations of its people this encounter will be, as well as a field for aesthetic appreciation and exchange, a space for finding functional cooperation mechanisms able to mutually enrich both regions filmmaking.

Above all, it should be space for recognition of the shared cultural values and historical roots of both regions, which are, beyond any doubt one of the main pillars of our nations´ culture.

AUDIOVISUALS, INFORMATION, INVESTIGATION - Soon available in Spanish, English and French.

The web page of the Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase has been designed to be an space for world-wide  promotion of Caribbean Cinema, brought to a higher level.

It is supported by a High-Tech infrastructure which offers the users a unique opportunity to visualize and download audiovisual material of extraordinary quality. This feature offers a unprecedented  opportunity for boosting the regional film market.

Caribefilm will also serve as a space for thought and socio-cultural debate for experts in Caribbean cinema and in other related areas of regional culture. The page includes the space “The Figured Image”, which contains three sections – “Essays and Thought”, “Dialogues and Interviews”, and “About Authors and their Work” – where investigation results of prestigious specialists from the region and of other parts of the world will converge, trough their publishing in Spanish English and French.

A daily updated news space with the most important events of the movie field of the area will also guarantee reliable information regarding this matter to the users. Likewise, through Caribefilm, users from around the world  will be able to know and have access to the subtitling and consultancy services provided by the Showcase. This consultancy service is supported by the Mediatheque and the Caribbean Cinema Database, CinemaCarib, created and developed by the Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase Office since the beginning with the purpose of facilitating information about Caribbean cinema to those interested in these matters.
